Dwight Yoakam nasceu em 23 de outubro de 1956, ingressou na música country no início dos anos 80 e colocou mais de trinta canções na Billboard Hot Country Songs Começou sua carreira em Nashville, embalado pelo movimento "Urban Cowboy" e gravando “Bakersfield Honky Tonk”, que foi considerada fora dos padrões countries daqueles dias. Não se deu bem em Nashville e mudou-se para Los Angeles levando seu traditional “Honky Tonk Alternativo” ou "Hillbilly Music" (como ele próprio gosta de chamar) pelos anos década de 1980
