Com seu álbum de 1965 "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid", Donovan fora, à época, comumente comparado a Bob Dylan. Mas Donavan era diferente. No mesmo ano, entretanto, o álbum "Fairytale" denota uma evolução singular em suas composições

Here are the lyrics and chords to the Donovan song "The Universal Soldier", which I think was written by Buffy Sainte-Marie, but I'm not at all sure. I think the place name in the line about Hitler could be wrong, but I can't hear what he's saying on that line. The rest of it should be OK.
Universal Soldier
EF#BG#m He's five foot two and he's six feet four EF#B He fights with missiles and with spears EF#BG#m He's all of thirty-one and he's only seventeen C#mF# He's been a soldier for a thousand years EF#BG#m He's a catholic, a hindu, an atheist, a jain, EF#B A buddhist and a baptist and a jew EF# And he knows he shouldn't kill BG#m And he knows he always will C#mF# Kill you for me, my friend and me for you EF#BG#m And he's fighting for Canada, he's fighting for France EF#BB7 He's fighting for the U.S.A. EF#BG#m He's fighting for the Russians and he's fighting for Japan C#mF# And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way EF#BG#m And he's fighting for democracy, he's fighting for the reds EF#BB7 He says it's for the peace of all EF#BG#m He's the one who must decide who's to live and who's to die C#mF# And he never sees the writing on the wall EF#BG#m But without him how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau EF#BB7 Without him Caesar would have stood alone EF#BG#m He's the one who gives his body as a weapon of the war C#mF# And without him all this killing can't go on EF#BG#m He's the universal soldier and he really is to blame EF#B His orders come from far away no more EC#m They come from here and there and you and me BG#m And brothers can't you see C#m This is not the way we put the end to war
