Com o nome tirado do conceito "de-evolution" apresentado no livro The Beginning Was the End: Knowledge Can Be Eaten, cuja a idéia fala que, ao invés de evoluirmos, a mentalidade humana regride. Sua música ecoa esta idéia na rígida, repressiva e mecânica sociedade americana. Com isso, o grupo se tornou uma sensação cult, ajudada pelo visual estilizado de seus integrantes.
