Devendra Banhart nasceu no dia 30 de maio de 1981 em Houston, Texas, morou por muitos anos em Caracas, Venezuela e depois voltou a morar nos E.U.A. Foi batizado com um nome indiano (Devendra significa "rei dos deuses" ou "rei dos céus") por influência de um guru amigo de seus pais.
Apareceu na onda do "New Weird America", um "movimento" que retoma os ares da psicodelia.
O músico é usualmente comparado com diversos artistas como Marc Bolan, Daniel Johnston, Billie Holiday, Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, John Fahey, e Tiny Tim.
