O Deep Purple é uma banda de rock inglesa formada em Hertford, Hertfordshire. Em 1967, Chris Curtis, ex-baterista do The Searchers, teve a idéia exótica de reunir vários músicos muito talentosos num grupo chamado Roundabout (carrossel). Eles se revezariam em torno do baterista, como num carrossel. Depois que a idéia foi comprada pelo produtor Tony Edwards, o primeiro músico a topar a idéia foi o tecladista Jon Lord, colega de Curtis nos The Flowerpot Men, onde também tocava o baixista Nick Simper.
