Ele é o vocalista da banda inglesa de Synth Pop Depeche Mode. Muito popular pela sua voz poderosa, expressão, animação e interação com o público nos shows. Ele também lançou um disco solo em 2003, chamado Paper Monsters, onde ele mostra a sua criatividade e habilidade como compositor e músico e até uma gaita e um piano de criança (da filha dele) são tocados.
