Damien Rice nasceu em 7 de dezembro de 1973, em Celbridge, no condado de Kildare, na Irlanda. É o segundo dos três filhos de George e Maureen, um casal trabalhador, e sempre foi considerado a ovelha negra da família.
Desde cedo, ele encara a música como uma excelente maneira de não apenas expressar, mas também de tentar compreender toda sua melancolia. É por isso que, logo no começo dos anos 90, ele se juntou a alguns colegas de colégio e formou a banda Juniper
