O Coldplay possui uma sonoridade próxima a de outros artistas como Radiohead, Oasis, Jeff Buckley e Travis. Outras influências são A-ha,U2, R.E.M, Pink Floyd, John Lennon, The Smiths, Sparklehorse, The Stone Roses, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips, Neil Young, Echo and the Bunnymen e, mais recentemente, Johnny Cash.
