Começou sua carreira em 1969. Springsteen é conhecido por suas letras patrióticas, poéticas, e sentimentos de afeição por sua terra natal, New Jersey.
Em 1965, apresentava-se no Greenwich Village em New York formado bandas como Steel Mill e Dr. Zoom and The Sonic Boom.
