O líder e vocalista Jon Bon Jovi (John Francis Bongiovi) começou a tocar piano e guitarra aos 13 anos, aprendendo músicas de Elton John. Com a mesma idade, fundou sua primeira banda, chamada Raze. Aos 16 anos, conheceu David Bryan (David Bryan Rashbaum) no colégio (Sayreville War Memorial High School). Os dois fundaram uma banda de R&B cover chamada Atlantic City Expressway. Eles tocaram em clubes de New Jersey mesmo sendo menores de idade. Ainda na adolescência, tocou na banda Jon Bon Jovi and the Wild Ones.
