NOTES
According to Eyolf Østrem (dylanchords.info) Bob Dylan played this in open A tuning (E A C# e a c#) with the
capo on 3 on Times They are a Changin’ (1964), which puts it in the key of C. In some live recordings Dylan
seems to play it in standard tuning in G (relative to capo).
This is a alternative version to play in standard tuning in C without a capo. Some of the other tabs on UG
suggest using Am instead of Em/B, which sounds fine but I think Em/B is closer to the original, with the
bass line descending from the C note to the B.
The alternative chords and shapes given above can be used to add variation. Another simple variation is to
walk up to the C chord on the 5th string via a and b (open and 2nd frets) on the first two syllables of the
first line.
During the harmonica parts between verses Bob plays similar chord progressions to those in the verses.
I will post another alternative tab of this song in drop D which sounds better to my ear, and closer to the
album recording.
C C
C Em/B
Down the street the dogs are barkin'
F/A C C
And the day is a-gettin' dark
C/G Em/B
As the night comes in a-fallin'
F/A G C Cmaj7/B
The dogs will lose their bark
C Em/B
And the silent night will shatter
F/A C C
From the sounds inside my mind
C * Em/B
As I'm one too many mornings
F/C G/D C Cmaj7/B
And a thousand miles behind
C Em/B
From the crossroads of my doorstep,
F/A C C
My eyes start to fade.
C/G Em/B
And I turn my head back to the room
F/A G C Cmaj7/B
Where my love and I have laid.
C Em/B
And I gaze back to the street
F/A C C
The sidewalk and the sign.
C * Em/B
As I'm one too many mornings
F/C G/D C Cmaj7/B
And a thousand miles behind
C Em/B
It's a restless, hungry feeling
F/A C C
That don't mean no one no good.
C/G Em/B
When everything I'm saying,
F/A G C Cmaj7/B
You can say it just as good.
C Em/B
You are right from your side,
F/A C C
And I am right from mine.
C * Em/B
We’re both just one too many mornings
F/C G/D C Cmaj7/B
And a thousand miles behind
