Formado em 1972 em Estocolmo, Suécia pelos músicos e compositores Björn Ulvaeus e Benny Andersson, e as vocalistas Agnetha Fältskog e Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida), foi o grupo sueco de maior sucesso mundial, dominando as principais paradas musicais entre a 2ª metade da década de 1970 e o início da de 1980.
