O cantor/compositor indie folk australiano Vance Joy começou sua carreira tocando em open-mikes em Melbourne no fim dos anos 2000 enquanto completava a formação em Direito. Encontrando sucesso com sua íntimas canções influencidas por Bon Iver, Vance decidiu deixar o Direito de lado e buscou uma carreira musical em vez disso. Nascido James Keogh, o cantor pegou o nome Vance Joy de um personagem do romance Bliss de Peter Carey para separar melhor sua vida pessoal e profissional.
