Considerada a pioneira do estilo progressivo, o Procol Harum difere da maioria das bandas de músicas progressivas dos anos setenta por causa do forte componente de blues, presente no som deles, que está em grande parte na voz e piano do líder Gary Brooker. Juntando, com o órgão de Matthew Fisher's e o violão de Robin Trower combinariam para um som sem igual.
Em várias formações, a banda continua até os dias atuais.
