Belle & Sebastian teve início em Janeiro de 1996, na cidade de Glasgow, Escócia, quando Stuart Murdoch e Stuart David se encontraram assim, meio sem querer, e começaram a tirar um som juntos. Murdoch escrevia canções sem qualquer pretensão. Porém, precisaria de um trabalho para finalizar o curso na faculdade. Recrutaram uns amigos num café 24 horas, um por um. Estava formado o Belle & Sebastian (nome de dois personagens de uma série de livros infantis franceses): Murdoch
