Nascido na cidade inglesa de Reading há 57 anos, Mike Oldfield teve a música como grande companheira e amiga de todas as horas. Já aos seus seis anos de idade, ganhou de seu pai sua primeira guitarra e já começou a mostrar seu talento. Aos 10 anos de idade, já tocava violão em clubes folk e, aos 15 anos, junto com sua irmã Sally, montaram o duo folk The Sallyangie, lançando um disco em 1968. Aos 16, tocava baixo e guitarra na nova banda do ex-Soft Machine Kevin Ayers
