Biografia:

A família de Hagard vinha da região árida a leste de Oklahoma e vivia em um trailer em Bakersfield, Califórnia, quando Merle nasceu, em 6 de abril de 1937. Merle tinha nove anos quando seu pai, um competente violinista, morreu e, sem sua boa influência, começou a viver perigosamente. Praticou uma série de pequenos furtos, que lhe valeram várias entradas e saidas da prisão local. Então, em 1957, ele foi acusado de tentar assaltar uma residência, o que lhe rendeu sentença de 6 a 15 anos de prisão em San Quentin.
