"Hide 'n' seekin" is a song by Paul Westerberg.
Thea Gilmore's version is on her album of covers, "Loft music" (2003).
[Verse 1]
Am F D/F# F Am
Is that you? Peeking out from that hat
F D/F# F Am
Hide 'n' seekin behind a drink that's gone flat
F D/F# F Am
Is that you? Peeking out from your tree
F D/F# F G
Hide 'n' seekin from everyone here but me
[Verse 2]
Am F D/F# F Am
Your hands are shaking and I know what they did
F D/F# F Am
Hide 'n' seekin, they never found you as a kid
F D/F# F Am
Your branch is breaking, you'll find another downtown
F D/F# F G
Hide 'n' seekin, coming crashing to the ground
[Chorus]
F C G
Hide 'n' seekin is for children, baby
F C Em7
Now it's hid and sought
F C G
Another week and you'll see yours maybe
F C Em
They treat you like some kinda outlaw
[Verse 3]
Am F D/F# F Am
Black night is falling, this is the blues you see
F D/F# F Am
Hide 'n' seekin, Father, Son and holy me
F D/F# F Am
You speak in parables, you're looking terrible tonight
F D/F# F G
Hide 'n' seekin, I wonder if you need a light
[Chorus]
F C G
Hide 'n' seekin is for children, baby
F C Em7
Now it's hid and sought
F C G
Another week and you'll see yours maybe
F C Em
They treat you like some kinda outlaw
[Outro]
Am F D/F# F Am
Hide 'n' seekin, Hide 'n' seekin, pa
F D/F# F Am
- - - (no words)
F D/F# F Am
Hide 'n' seekin, Hide 'n' seekin, ma
Am F D/F# F Am
- - - (no words)
Am F D/F# F Am
...this is the blues you see
Am F D/F# F Am
Hide 'n' seekin ...
Am F D/F# F Am
Notes:
The driving force in this song is the chromatic rising and falling bass:
from F to F sharp and back to F, which gives it a pulsating, haunting quality.
Experiment with occasionally playing the E as the bass note for the A minor chord,
to emphasize the motion even more.
It's also okay to experiment with a D7 over F sharp, if you like.
A simple structure like this lends itself to variations and experiments.
You can repeat the last chorus an extra time.
Have fun!
