Formado em 1989 e inspirado pelos Stones Roses, o The Charlatans tinha o tecladista Rob Collins, o guitarrista Jon Baker, o baixista Martin Blunt e o baterista Jon Brookes, mas não haviam encontrado um vocalista. Depois de vários testes, Tim Burguess assumiu o microfone. Em 1990 lançaram o primeiro single, Indian Rope, pelo selo Dead Dead Good Records.
O que diferenciava o grupo, dos demais de Manchester, era o estilo dos teclados usados por Collins, fazendo com que Indian Rope chegasse ao primeiro posto das paradas indies.
