Ricky Van Shelton was one of country music's biggest male stars during the late '80s and early '90s, prior to the emergence of crossover sensations like Garth Brooks. Shelton's smooth baritone croon made him especially popular as a country-pop ballad stylist, but elsewhere he incorporated elements of rock, gospel, and classic honky tonk. Shelton was born in Danville, VA, in 1952 and grew up in the small town of Grit. He learned to sing at church and discovered country music as a teenager, performing at local gatherings whenever he could.

E I heard him say, "I love you" B I heard him say, "Forever" F#mBE Without you he'd rather be dead
I felt my hand shaking B7 I felt my heart breaking E 'Cause I meant every word he said E7 I saw him whisper something B7 Then I saw you look so happy F#m It's a look I won't ever forget
'Cause whatever he told you B7 Meant I'd never hold you EC#,B,G#,E And I meant every word he said
E7A His heart stole those words from my head F#7 Now it's too late to tell you B7 What he's already said E7 I heard him say, "I love you" B7 I heard him say, "Forever" F#7 Then he said, "With this ring I thee wed"
And when he said, "I do" B7 I choked back, "I do too" E And I meant every word he said.
