I'm pretty sure what I figured out is mostly correct, feel free to let me know of any changes you think I
should make.
The intro uses three different fingerings of E, and I think I got pretty close.
During the bridge section the E/D means E with D (or C# when tuned half step down), fingered as:
e|--0----|
B|--0----|
G|--1----|
D|--0----|
A|--2----|
E|--0----|
[Intro]
E E E
e|--4----| e|--0----|
B|--5----| B|--0----|
G|--4----| G|--9----|
D|--6----| D|--9----|
A|--7----| A|--7----|
E|--0----| E|--0----|
[Verse 1]
(muted)
E C#m
I heard your voice reverberating off of the back wall of the cathedral.
B A E
It echoed off the wedding bells and disappeared down Route 18.
(E) C#m
At first I tried to guide it back towards the strings of my heart where your hands pulled,
B A E
but it was faster and more devious than I could ever hope to be.
(regular strumming)
(E) C#m
So I racked my brain for days and days hoping I’d find some magic combination;
B A E
some special set of syllables to send your heart back to my door.
(E) C#m
But progress can’t be made if you’re the one who keeps on doing all the changing,
B A E
and every sentence that I say to you seems to fall just short.
[Chorus]
A E A F#m
If I could change you, I don’t think that I’d have the guts to.
A E D A
My roots have shown through and there’s no room for you here
E
to get stuck in the ground.
[Instrumental]
E C#m B A
[Verse 2]
E C#m
The distances we drew between did not present a clear and present danger;
B A E
and when we finally noticed them they were too heavy to move on.
(E strum once and mute) C#m
And somewhere between Madison and Bellingham I thought I had an answer,
B A E
but by the time I got to Denver I could plainly see that it was gone.
[Chorus]
A E A F#m
If I could change you, I don’t think that I’d have the guts to.
A E D A
My roots have shown through and there’s no room for you here
E
to get stuck in the ground.
[Instrumental]
E E/D A Am (x2)
[Bridge]
E E/D A Am
I found you in the night with the porch lights shining bright.
E E/D A Am
In the dead of the fall, that was where I lost it all.
E E/D A Am
Could you be more to me than a future memory
E E/D A Am G#m
of a girl, weighed down by the circumstances found and floundering
A Am
under the weight of all we’ve yet to be?
[Instrumental]
E C#m B A (x2)
G#m
Under all the weight
A Am
under the weight of all we've yet to be
[Outro]
E E E
