.Nascida Lucille Anderson em Amory, Mississippi, e cresceu em Birmingham, Alabama. Em 1916 ela se casou Nazaret Lee Bogan, um ferroviário, onde tiveram um único filho.
Ela gravou canções de “vaudevill” para a Okeh em Nova Iorque em 1923, com pianista Henry Callens. Depois aquele ano ela gravou Blues e gravou em Atlanta, sendo a primeira cantora negra de Blues a gravar fora de Nova Iorque ou Chicago.
