Algumas de suas composições viraram sucesso nas vozes de cantoras como Rihanna e Beyoncé. Além disto, é freqüentemente comparado a Michael Jackson pelas coreografias que realiza nos clipes.
Ganhou esse apelido (Ne-Yo) devido a uma comparação com o personagem principal do filme Matrix, Neo.
