Getting In the Coal

Valley Park, Mo.
D A D
Dad and I would bounce down the road
A
In a truck we had borrowed from the neighbors again
D G D
On an early Sept- ember morn
A D
To get a load of coal before winter set in
A D
The truck would shudder and bounce
A
As they funneled in the coal at the mine
D G D
Small chunks of nut coal it was called
D A D
A lot of shoveling to do once it was hauled
A D
Dad would back the truck up to basement window
A
I pushed the heavy coal chute in
D G D
We shoveled coal together all morning long
A D
Sliding the coal into the bin below
G A D
Shiny blue-black lumps of coal
A
Would burn in the furnace this winter
D G D
But right now, to get done was the goal
A D
And take the truck back to the neighbor
[Chorus]
D G D
It was a drag to me in my youth
A
To have to do the chores and work that way
D G D
But now late in life, I know the truth
A D
And I wish I could shovel coal again with Dad today
