Gorbel cresceu no subúrbio de Long Island, Nova Iorque e começou a tocar guitarra quando tinha 13 anos, nesta idade passou por uma fase metaleira, da qual se recuperou entrando de cabeça na música folk. Aos poucos foi incorporando novas referências e seu gosto musical foi se formando quando, depois das aulas, o garoto ia direto para locais como The Mercury Lounge, Brownies, CBGB's e Knitting Factory, não apenas para assistir aos shows, mas também para fazer algumas apresentações solo.
