Formada em 1980, na capital australiana, Canberra, pelo vocalista, letrista e baixista, Steve Kilbey (inglês, mudou-se com a família para a Austrália aos quatro anos), e seu amigo de infância, o guitarrista, Peter Koppes, de ascendência grega e holandesa. O The Church surge no início da década de 80 como tentativa mais madura e coerente de refletir as influências de Kilbey - que, naquela época, escrevia todas as canções sozinho e gravava-as
