Brian Setzer era um garoto apaixonado pelo estilo dos anos 50, especialmente pelo rockabilly imortalizado por Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent e tantos outros ídolos mortos, ou esquecidos. Brian tinha uma banda com seu irmão Gary e Bob Beecher chamada de The Bloodless Brothers, em 1979. Gary era baterista e Bob era o baixista. O nome foi logo alterado para Tom Cats, mas a formação original durou poucos meses, pois Brian quis fazer algo melhor e quando o pianista Ken Kinnaly entrou na banda, Brian deu adeus.
