Tabbed by: Ed
This is my version that I play on solo acoustic guitar. It's a lot shorter
than the actual song; most of the instrumental fills get kind of repetitive
with just an acoustic where, in the studio version, the bass or drums do
something interesting. You can play them if you want, most (not all, there
are one or two nearer the end that I don't play and aren't in this tab) of
them are just three chords that you can jazz up.
Chords used:
EADGBE
Am x02210
A2 x02200
A9 x07000 (more precisely, A9(no 3rd))
Asus4 x02230
D xx0232 (you can play the open A if you want)
G 320003
A x02220 (optional)
Intro:
Am A2 Am A2 A9
(The intro progression repeats as is until after "your way home")
Am A2 Am
Listen to the tales and romanticize,
A2 A9
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Am A2 Am
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
A2 A9
How we rise to the height of our halo.
Am A2 Am
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
A2 A9
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Am A2 Am
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
A2 A9 Am A2 Am A2 A9 (repeat if desired)
None of us have actually been there. Not like you.
Am A2 Am
Ignorant siblings in the congregation
A2 A9
Gather around spewing sympathy, Spare me.
Am A2 Am
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
A2 A9
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.
Am A2
But, enough about the collective Judas.
Am
Who could deny you were the one who
A2 A9
Illuminated your little piece of the divine?
Am A2
And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
Am A2 A9
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way, Your way home ...
Instrumental break: Am A2 Am A2 A9 Am A2 Am Asus4 A2 A9
(the Asus4 and following A2 take up half a measure each, while each other
chord is a full measure. You can throw in this variation any other time the
main progression comes up in the future.)
Am A2 Am
Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
A2 A9
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
Am A2 Am
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
A2 A9
Other than tremble incessantly?
Am A2 Am A2
High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
Am A2 Am A2
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
Am A2 Am A2
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Am A2 A9 (one strum, hold)
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
Am A2 Am A2 A9
You're going home.
Am A2 Am
You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
A2 A9
Shake your fists at the gates saying: "I've come home now!"
Am A2
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Am A2
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
(I just go crazy on A9 here but you can throw in Am, A2, Asus4, A5, whatever)
A9
It's time now!
A9
My time now!
A9 A9 Am A2 Am A2 A9
Give me my, give me my wings!"
(Here the recording goes into a long solo. Repeat the chords as many times as desired.)
Am A2 Am A2 A9
Hey oh, whoa oh oh oh o-oh, o-oh, o-oh, o-oh
Am A2 Am A2
Hey oh, whoa oh oh oh
A9
You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Am A2 Am Asus4 D D G G
Am A2 Am Asus4
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,

Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
Am A2 Am Asus4

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.

Difficult to see you in this light.

Am A2 Asus4 A9
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Am A2 A9
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
Am A2 A9
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Am A2 Am Asus4 A2 A
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."
(I end on A but you can end on A9 if you want a different feel.)
