Gary Numan nasceu a 8 de março de 1958 no Reino unido, com o nome de Gary Webb. A princípio no comando do Tubeway Army, com um som inspirado pelo punk rock da época, Gary Numan destacou-se com o seu som sintetizado retomando uma linha de rock electrónico praticado anteriormente por Ultravox e David Bowie, inspirado por clássicos da ficção científica como K.Dick.. Em termos líricos, há recorrência dos temas de alienação, futuristas e anti-religião.
