Uma dose de bom humor e um ritmo envolvente é a fórmula de fazer música do De La Soul. Os componentes do grupo acharam uma forma divertida de ‘trocar’ de nomes. Posdnuos é Kelvin Mercer, o nome surgiu uma inversão de Sound Sog. E Trugoy é na verdade David Jude Jolicoeur. O nome resulta da comida predileta de Jolicoeur: Yogurt (ao contrário). E por fim Pasemaster Mase é Vicent Mason. A música é suave e eclética, não é apenas funk e soul. Os três incluem em suas batidas mistura de pop, jazz e reggae.
