BmEm We are friends in a sleeping bag splitting the heat GCGC We have one filthy pillow to share and your lips are in my hair GBm Someone upstairs has a rat that we laughed at Em And people are drinking GCGC And singing Van Halen and Slayer on a ukulele tear
G Bm Well we found an apartment Em It's not much to look at GC A futon on a floor GC Torn-off desktop for a door GBm All the decor's made of milk crates and duct tape Em And if we have sex GC They can hear us through the floor GC But we don't do that anymore
GEm And I lay there wondering what is the matter GEm Is this a matter of worse or of better GEm You took the blanket so I took the bedsheet GEm But I would have held you if you'd only C Let me
G Bm Look how quaint Em And how quiet and private GC Our paychecks have bought us a condo in town GC It's the nicest flat around GBm You picked a mattress and had it delivered Em And I walked upstairs GC And the sight of it made my heart pound GC And I wrapped my arms around me
GEm And I stood there wondering what is the matter GEm Is this a matter of worse or of better GEm You walked right past me and straightened the covers GEmC But I would still love you if you wanted a lover
CEmDGCdimAmBmC But you said 'All the money in the world won't buy a bed so big and wide EmDGCdimAmBmC to guarantee that you won't acci - dentally touch me in the night '
G Exhibit D Bm Now we're both mostly paralyzed EmGC Don't know how long we've been lying here in fear GC Too afraid to even feel GBm I find my glasses and you turn the light out Em Roll off on your side GC Like you've rolled away for years GC Holding back those king-size tears
GEm And I still don't ask you what is the matter GEm Is this a matter of worse or of better G You take the heart failure Em I'll take the cancer GEmC I've long stopped wondering why you don't answer
G Exhibit E BmEm You can certainly see how fulfilling a life GCGC From the cost and size of stone of our final resting home GBm We got some nice ones right under a cherry tree EmGC You and me lying the only way we know GC Side by side and still and cold
GEm And I finally ask you what was the matter GEm Was it a matter of worse or of better GEm You stretch your arms out and finally face me G You say I would have told you EmC If you'd only asked me EmC If you'd only asked me EmC If you'd only asked me
