Em 1973, alguns músicos veteranos da cena musical de Bay Area, San Francisco. Neal Schon, que havia tocado com Santana no começo dos anos 70, convocou Aynsley Dunbar, baterista de Frank Zappa, Ross Valory, também ex-Santana, Gregg Rolie nos teclados e vocais e George Tickner, nas guitarras. No começo, o som do Journey era um jazz rock instrumental. Com essa formação eles lançariam alguns compactos, sendo que Tickner deixaria a banda após o primeiro, para se tornar médico.
