Com o nome de um licor, o grupo foi formado em 1992, depois que o baixista Craig Montoya e o baterista Scott Cuthbert responderem a um anúncio colocado por Art Alexakis nos classificados do jornal de música “The Rocket”, de Seattle. O primeiro álbum, “World of Noise” conseguiu chamar a atenção do público local e de grandes selos. Em 1994 a banda assina com uma gravadora maior, a Capitol Records e Greg Eklund substitui Cuthbert, que sofria com a dependência química.
