Nascida em família de militares, Emmylou passou a infância e adolescência mudando de cidade em cidade, entre os estados de Alabama, Carolina do Norte e Virgínia. Enquanto estudava teatro na University of North Carolina, ela aprendeu a tocar músicas de Bob Dylan e Joan Baez. Em seguida, mudou-se para Nova York, para dedicar-se apenas à música.
