Curtis nasceu em Saco, Maine. Pela idade de quinze anos ela já estava tocando bateria para uma companhia de teatro local e no final da adolescência ela cantou com Foreigner em uma performance de "I Wanna Know What Love Is". Ela se formou pela Universidade de Brown, em Providence, Rhode Island com uma licenciatura em história e mudou-se para Boston, Massachusetts, onde começou a trabalhar o circuito de folk rock. Seu primeiro CD, a partir de anos "Hours", em 1991; e seu segundo CD, "The Truth Lies", em 1995.
