Bright Eyes é o projeto do cantor e compositor Conor Oberst, nascido em Omaha, Nebraska, que tem produzido música desde os 13 anos de idade. Ele lançou seus dois primeiros álbuns aos 14 anos com a banda Commander Venus. Depois do fim desta, em 1997, o principal objetivo de Conor se tornou Bright Eyes, e em 1998 ele lançou seu primeiro álbum, A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995 1997 (uma coleção de 20 músicas inéditas), com a gravadora independente Saddle Creek
