O Black Flag foi uma banda de punk/hardcore formada em Hermosa Beach, Califórnia em 1976 pelo guitarrista Greg Ginn. A banda formou um som que misturava a simplicidade do Ramones mas com solos microtonais e paradas no meio da música, o que mais a frente influênciou de bandas de heavy metal a bandas de hardcore. As letras tratavam de temas como isolamento, neuroses e paranóia, coisas que Henry Rollins aprofundou quando entrou na banda.
