Filho de pai italiano e mãe norte-americana, Angelo Badalamenti nasceu em 1938 no Brooklyn, Nova York. Tendo crescido ouvindo ópera e música clássica, ele estudou na prestigiada Eastman School of Music, e posteriormente na Manhattan School of Music. Sua entrada no mundo das trilhas sonoras ocorreu em 1986, quando o diretor David Lynch o contratou para trabalhar no filme Veludo Azul (Blue Velvet).
