The Mountain Goats é o projeto musical do canto/compositor e guitarrista John Darnielle. A revista The New Yorker referiu a ele como "Melhor compositor não-hip-hop da América". No artigo de junho de 2006, revista Paste nominou Darnielle um dos "100 melhores compositores ao vivo". As letras de Darnielle são literais e repletas com imaginário com referências da literatura clássica, religião e mitologia, cultura pop, arte, e história.
