Em 1983, Jim e William resolveram gravar uma demo com duas músicas e em 1984 convidaram o baixista Douglas Hart e o baterista Murray Dalglish para montarem um grupo. Nascia assim o The Jesus and Mary Chain, nome provavelmente tirado de um antigo filme de Bing Crosby, versão jamais confirmada pelos irmãos Reid.
Uma cópia dessas demos acabou chegando até Alan McGee, que estava montando a Creation. Jim se lembra do primeiro contato com Alan: "é uma estória bizarra.
