O Sum 41 se formou em 1996, em Ajax, Ontario, Canadá, pelos adolescentes Deryck Whibley e Steve Jocz. Cone McCaslin foi recrutado somente em 1999, depois da banda ter tido vários baixistas. O grupo apostava numa mistura bem humorada de pop, punk e hip hop.
O nome da banda, Sum 41, é uma abreviação da expressão: "41 days into the Summer", ou seja, 41 dias de verão, porque a banda foi formada no 41° dia do verão canadense.
Depois de criarem uma fita com algumas travessuras da banda (incluindo um roubo de pizzas com armas d'água)
