Tudo tem início em 1962, quando Francis Rossi e o baixista Alan Lancaster se unem para formar um grupo chamado The Scorpions (muito antes do outro Scorpions alemão). Depois de algum tempo de garagem, a banda passou a se chamar The Spectres, e logo com a mudança de nome, passaram a se ligar mais em guitarras, graças ao rock de Cliff Richard (na época um verdadeiro “Elvis” inglês). Nessa época conhecem o baterista John Coghlan, que tocava em outra banda das redondezas, o The Cadets.
