Nascido em Sheffield na Inglaterra,Richard Hawley aprendeu a tocar guitarra logo cedo com seu pai, um fã ardoroso de Gene Vincent e que chegou até a tocar algum tempo com Eddie Cochran.
Sua infãncia foi regada com canções de Roy Orbison, Elvis e Johnny Cash, influencias importantes na formação de Richard Hawley também como vocalista. Estreou definitivamente nos anos noventa como guitarrista da banda de britpop "Longpigs" com quem gravou dois álbuns "The Sun is Often Out" (1996) e "Mobile Home"(1999).
