Meredith Brooks é uma das muitas compositoras que surgiu depois do sucesso do rock alternativo de Liz Phair e PJ Harvey, embora tenha mais semelhanças com Sheryl Crow e Alanis Morissette.
Meredith nasceu e cresceu no Oregon, descobrindo blues, rhythm ‘n’ blues e classic rock ainda adolescente, quando decidiu aprender a tocar violão. Começou a compor algumas canções, assinando contrato com a Capitol Records em 1997. No mesmo ano, gravou seu primeiro single, “Bitch” – um pop-rock muito semelhante ao som de Morissette.
