Chesnutt is the second son of Bobby Thomas Chesnutt and Norma Jean Nicholas. He learned to love music from his father, who was a singer and record collector. Chesnutt dropped out of school after his sophomore year of high school to begin playing with his father in clubs around Southeast Texas. When he turned 17, his father began to take him to Nashville, Tennessee to begin recording. For the next ten years, Chesnutt began to record on small regional labels while he was the house band for local Beaumont nightclub Cutters.

DD/C#BmA I don't know how to get her off my mind, GDAm But give me time, and I'll think of something. DD/C#BmA I can't say today that I'm alright, GDD But by tonight, I'll think of something.
AG I'll find so many things to do that I won't have AD the time to think of her. AG And then if she's still on my mind I'll try to ABm drink enough to drown the hurt, GDAm And if that don't work, I'll think of something.
DD/C#BmA Where do I go for lovin' I still need, GDAm Now that I'm free, I'll think of something. DD/C#BmA And if someday by accident we meet, GDD and I can't speak, I'll think of something.
AG If I can't say a word to her I'll blame it on this AD lump that's in my throat. AG And standin' there what will I do to hide my love ABm enough that it don't show-- GD I don't know, but I'll think of something.
G I don't know,
DD/C#BmA I don't know how to get her off my mind, GDAm but give me time, and I'll think of something.
