Lindsey Adams Buckingham nasceu em Palo Alto, Califórnia no dia 3 de outubro de 1949. Cresceu na comunidade de Atherton, California na área da baía de San Francisco, Buckingham e seus irmãos foram incentivados a nadar competitivamente porém, Buckingham largou o esporte para seguir a música. Buckingham nunca tomou lições de guitarra e não estudou música. Em 1962, a primeira onda do rock and roll tinha terminado e retrocedido e Buckingham interessou-se pela música folk.
