Johnny Royce Mathis nasceu em 30 de setembro de 1935em Gilmor,Texas,filho de Clen e Mildred Mathis.Ainda criança sua família decidio mudar-se para San Francisco,e foi lá que aprendeu a gostar de música com seu pai,que comprou um velho piano por us 25,00 e o ensinou a primeira canção,"May Blue Heaver".Isso ocorria quando Johnny tinha 8 anos e foi o único filho de Clen a se interesar por música,aprendeu música de canto em escola, em coral de igreja eventos comunitários e visitas em sua casa tambem em pequenos shows.
