VERSE: EC#m Three sisters EEBC#m Came to me last night,
EC#mEEBC#m Last night.
VERSE: E They said, "There's a boat C#m On the shore, EEBC#m A gas lantern and one oar
EC#mEEBC#m For your trip.
VERSE: EC#m Go home, EEBC#m And tell your mother don't
EC#mEEBC#m Don't weep for me.
VERSE: EC#m Leave everything you have there EEBC#m For beasts of the field and birds of the air
EC#mEEBC#m To trample and steal."
VERSE: EC#m "Three sisters, EEBC#m Tell me what you're called,
EC#mEEBC#m You're named by men."
VERSE: E "Want of love," C#m Said the first, EEBC#m "The most noble aim on Earth,
EC#mEEBC#m And I am known by all."
VERSE: E "Want of wealth," C#m Said the next, EEBC#m "So your work's not meaningless,
EC#mEEBC#m And I am loved by most."
VERSE: E "Want of none," C#m Said the third, EEBC#m As her sisters' faces turned,
EC#mEEBC#m And they seemed to forget me.
VERSE: E "With one of us, C#m You must sail. EEBC#m It's always been and always will,
EC#mEEBC#m Though no one's ever told you."
VERSE: EC#m "Well, my mother lived alone, EEBC#m So I have no need of love,
EC#m And I have no wish to conquer man. EEBC#m I see no need for needy friends."
EC#mEEBC#m The sisters laughed.
VERSE: EC#m "There's truly nothing that you need. EEBC#m You won't miss us when we leave,"
EC#mEEBC#m And I had cast them out.
VERSE: EC#m To the boat I was led. EEBC#m As we approached, I turned and said,
Wait.
EC#mEEBC#m "I need some oil."
VERSE: E I said, "To light the lamp, C#m I need some oil. EEBC#m To steer the boat I need two oars."
VERSE: EC#m The sisters said, "Money can buy you oil EEBC#m And a friend can man an oar."
