O cantor/compositor Gregory Alan Isakov nasceu em Joanesburgo, África do Sul e foi criado em Filadélfia, Pensilvânia, onde ele começou a sair em turnê com uma banda aos 16 anos, antes de eventualmente mudar-se novamente para Colorado para afiar suas qualidades como um artista solo. Influenciado pelo lirismo rural de artistas como Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Joe Phelps e Leonard Cohen, não demorou muito antes da própria mistura de folk empoeirado com americana melancólica de Gregory começar a virar cabeças.
