O estado de Michigan, nos EUA, foi o berço das maiores bandas de garagem da América. O famoso "som de Detroit" e seus arredores, como Saginaw e Flint, ficou caracterizado pela incrível agressividade, força e volume que suas bandas nativas geravam. Exemplos como Stooges, MC5, Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes, Bob Seger System, Cactus e Alice Cooper, mostram que era a "capital nacional do som de garagem" em contrapartida ao som lento e viajante da costa Oeste, vide a psicodelia de São Francisco.
